On March 11 Japan was hit by the largest earthquake in the country’s history. The 9.0 magnitude quake triggered a massive tsunami along the northeastern coast — sweeping away entire villages with walls of water more than 30 feet high.

The worst floods in Pakistan’s recorded history have affected some 20 million people in that country. And warnings of more flooding this week have increased the urgency of a massive international relief effort. Among those giving aid is the Taiwan Red Cross, which said Monday that it will donate $100,000 US dollars in relief money to Pakistan. The floods began more than two weeks ago in the mountainous northwest and have spread throughout the country.
